International Construction Consortium Pvt Ltd (ICC), has planned to establish an out-patient accommodation shelter for the Apeksha (Cancer)Hospital, Maharagama with the prime intention of fulfilling a social obligation towards the Sri Lankan Community, the patients as well as the Apeksha Hospital. This project is implemented as a Corporate Social Responsibility strategy of the company with the long term objective of serving the out-patients of the Apeksha hospital while providing a comprehensive solution to one of the major problems faced by the Hospital in serving the medication facilities to the out-patients coming from remote parts of the country. The facility will comprise of a four story building built adjacent to the Apeksha Hospital consisting of 36 bedrooms completed with sanitary facilities for Patient & Guardian.

This Shelter has opened 26 September 2019, patient accommodation unit will be administered by the Norman Weerasooria Memorial Shelter registered under the Department of Registrar of Companies as a charitable organization, hereafter referred to as the "Company". Furthermore, the cost and expense with respect to the construction, administration and the monitoring of the Centre will be solely born by the same.

ICC is implementing this project with the hope of providing a better experience for the patients visiting the Apeksha Hospital for medication, providing them with the facility to have a calm and peaceful stay in a complementary environment with amiable companionship.

The project is initiated by ICC in memory of the company's founding Chairman, the Late Mr. Norman E. Weerasooria.

It is a clear fact that a mammoth amount of cancer related patients visit Apeksha Hospital every day to obtain their medication and treatments on various disciplines. According to the hospital statistics, around 800 patients visit the hospital for outdoor treatments, out of which a significant percentage belonging to remote areas far away from Maharagama. Almost every patient is accompanied by a family member and during their treatment period, they find it very hard to find accommodation. If they are fortunate enough, they may find shelter in one of the close by accommodation centres which are very few. If not, they will have to stay in a temple, or find a relation's place, or else spend money to rent a room nearby the hospital.

After considering the difficulties faced,especially by the destitute innocent patients, we decided that this project would fulfill an urgent need of the society. It is an obvious fact that the involvement of private sector in this regardis a need of the hour and ICC is taking the initiative in giving their utmost effort to a worthy course.
